More pay. What else changes?

Compare two job offers when money, commuting time and benefits pull in different directions. This educational example uses invented inputs.

Compare money on the same basis

Option A: $5,400 monthly after-tax pay minus $300 additional recurring costs = $5,100. Option B: $6,550 minus $750 = $5,800. Other household expenses are not included.

Keep time and benefits separate

At five on-site days, a 24-minute one-way commute adds four hours a week. A 60-minute commute adds ten. With 40 work hours in each role, that is 44 versus 50 hours: $700 more per month, six more hours per week. Review health coverage, paid leave and retirement terms separately.

Verify the unknowns

Check actual offer and benefit documents, conditional bonuses and remote-work arrangements. Do not deduct a premium twice if already included in take-home pay. US Department of Labor: First Job. Compare your own alternatives. No personalized financial, tax, legal or employment advice.
